Research opportunities for medical trainees

We are keen to attract clinical specialist trainees to work in the laboratory. Most current medical training programmes are heavily targeted towards clinical practice, in part due to the lack of opportunities for clinicians to conduct research in an outstanding environment. We offer placements for clinical specialist trainees, through which they will be able to spend 6-12 months in a Centre laboratory.

These placements are very flexible, open to both individuals on an academic track or not. These placements contribute to capacity building by training the clinical academic leaders of the future and strengthening the links between basic science and clinical practice.

We are offering competitive 6-month research placements (with the potential to extend another 6 months) to clinicians as an ‘Out of Programme Experience’ (OOPE) in the Centre for Neurodevelopmental Disorders. These placements will provide research-protected time for clinical specialist trainees in neurology, psychiatry and related disciplines.

OOPE placements can be undertaken in any of the Centre laboratories and will provide an opportunity to not only develop research skills but also to generate critical preliminary data which could then be used to apply for a Clinical Training Fellowship or intermediate fellowship.

Clinicians at any stage of training are welcome to apply, but we particularly encourage those who are intending to pursue a PhD or intermediate fellowship and are keen to obtain additional research experience and/or preliminary data beforehand. OOPE positions are open to all UK clinical trainees, including those on academic paths who would benefit from additional research time.
